In Evan's quote, he wants to return to "the simplicity, native feelings, and virtues of savage life". He wants to find his true self in the wild. By going into the wild with nothing more than the essentials he can carry, he wants to find a deeper meaning to his life.
This is similar to how Nash thinks about his society. He views the wild as "solitude and total freedom". It is every man for himself in the wild, with no technology to hide behind. You can forget about your problems that society forces you to deal with and reach a sense of euphoria.
