Connections from Into the Wild

The two selected paragraphs from Into the Wild are basically hinting that nature acts as a safe haven from what we have made of our civilization. It offers a new beginning where man can have a fresh start at life, and "divest [himself] of the factitous habits, prejudices and imperfections of civilization" (Evans). Wilderness attracts people who are not pleased with the way that society is today. Not only is this environment an escape from what man has created, but it allows a person to "exercise the cult that he frequently made of his own soul" (Nash). The paragraphs together imply that nature is an escape from the daily imperfections of civilization, whether for better or for worse, which is what man strives for.
