Evan seems to be set out on a journey of self discovery. He is like a traveler interested in experiencing things that contrast each other, like the "pleasure of suffering". His desire to experience the wilderness stems from a more spiritual pursuit of the ideal states of human behavior. At the same time Nash seems to be refuting the "grandeur" of the wilderness that Evans is fascinated about. Speaking from a scientific mind, Nash claims that romanticizing wilderness is an escapist attitude , shown by one who has lost interest in the far more glorious feats achieved by human beings.
