The idea of being alone in nature is intriguing for both Evans and Nash along with most people. But the mindset you hold for such a journey is extremely important. Evans thinks that the thrill of the trip and the danger creates the experience. He states “that I might experience the pleasure of suffering and the novelty of danger” (344). These thrills can only be achieve by a near death or dangerous experience. Nash seems to think differently. He says “the solitude and total freedom of the wilderness created a perfect setting for either melancholy or exultation” (344). Nash’s point is just that the beauty and vastness of nature is enough to get anyone excited. You don’t need to put your life at risk to get everything you can from nature. Nature can be appreciated many different ways be many different people.
